A West Coast Thing?

Film review May 9, Montreal

The Pearl Button, Patricio Guzman’s spacey expository account of the obscure atrocity events Christian missionaries, empire-driven Europeans, and the nascent local regime inflicted on Southern Chile’s isolated tribes up into the 1970’s. Supported by the US, Pinochet’s bloody tyranny brooked no critics, especially those with any indigenous pretensions.

The sad history flows up to recent underwater recoveries of massive steel weights that sank humans (living and dead) thrown from helicopters.

The butchery included bounties on testicles and breasts. Like California’s grotesque history, little known and remarkable in its bloodthirsty course, the Pearl Button illustrates the covered-up savagery Chile hides behind high-tech successes like incredible telescope arrays atop the Andes.

  1. World class takes on a new meaning on this edge of the West Coast, but few dare to reveal what it really means as well as Guzman.

Egypt’s telecom cranks out a sweet valentine for free speech and shared crap

Telecom authority appeals YouTube ban | Egypt Independent.

From a post at the Egypt Independent February 14, 2013

Egypt’s banning (for 30 days) of YouTube’s hosted video trailer for The Innocence of Muslims” is being baffled by simple technological fact.

Internet technology experts recently told Egypt Independent that enforcing the ban would be costly and difficult.

Egypt doesn’t need “costly and difficult”, and c’mon, wiping the entire connected Egyptian population’s caches and connections is basically impossible, even for the wannabe al-powerful dogmacrats of the Brotherhood.

Egypt’s National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA), that would be tasked with immediately achieving the impossible, is said to be appealing the ban.

The Guardian also has more details on the players and issues at play, including names.
